NIGHT BEFORE DE-ICER

Get Rid of Slippery Frost and Ice

WHY IS ECOGRIT THE BEST NIGHT BEFORE DE-ICER OUT THERE?

During colder months, there is often another chore that needs to be added to the morning routine – that of clearing any frozen ice, snow or frost from driveways, paths, exterior surfaces and even the car windscreen before you can set off for work, school or your daily errands. Getting rid of slippery frost and ice can go a long way toward preventing slips and trips that could land you in hospital, seriously compromising your ability to operate as normal in the winter.

We all lead busy lives, however, and taking the time to get rid of ice and snow takes up valuable time. It can also be a hard job to complete without the right tools and can be messy to clear up. One obvious solution is to apply a safe ice melt the evening before so that it can get to work overnight to leave your outdoor surfaces clear of ice and safe to walk or drive straight away.

It is important to choose the right product for this job, as temperatures can really fall during the night, rendering many solutions ineffective. Using a natural de-icer for driveways such as EcoGrit, which has been proven to work down to temperatures of minus 20 degrees C.

WHY CHOOSE A NATURAL, ORGANIC DE-ICER LIKE ECOGRIT?

There are many other reasons why it is prudent to treat driveways and paths with EcoGrit the night before sub-zero temperatures are expected. The eco-friendly ice melter does not damage concrete, paving stones, tarmac or resin-based surfaces, neither does it shed harmful chemicals into surrounding gardens, ponds or ecosystems, unlike other types of ice melting products that can contain high levels of sodium chloride or urea.

EcoGrit is easy to apply, either by applying directly to surfaces in granule form or by dissolving two scoops into every litre of water used and spraying the mix onto railings, steps, ramps etc. It can also be used on padlocks, hinges and bolts for easy access to sheds, outhouses and other exterior areas after a night of snow, ice or heavy frost. Even better news is that it is entirely safe for pets and local wildlife that may accidentally ingest it, or absorb it through their paws during an evening stroll or while they are exploring outside.

HOW CAN I STOP MY DRIVEWAY FROM FREEZING OVERNIGHT?

As well as applying a liberal amount of EcoGrit granules or spray-based products before turning in for the night, there are several other things you can do to help keep your driveway safe and clear of ice overnight. If you are able to install a heating system, such as specialist mats that are installed on or just underneath the surface to stop any snow or frost that comes into contact with the ground from freezing hard. This can work well but is an expensive option that many people will not be able to or are willing to choose.

Adding sand or grit that does not contain any rock salt or other harmful substances can help add traction for when you need to move your vehicle off a slippery surface or wish to make it safer to walk on while the de-icer works its magic.

Do make absolutely sure that whatever you use is environmentally safe and appropriate for the surface you are treating and any people and animals who may come into contact with it. Also, watch out that the sand won’t clog up any drains as the ice thaws and the water starts to run off your driveway.

In heavy snowfall, you also have the good, old-fashioned shovel and work to remove the snow as it falls to stop it freezing in large quantities and causing problems the following day. This can be a particularly effective approach if combined with the application of an animal-safe ice melt such as EcoGrit, which can be applied once the driveway is clear to stop any related build-ups overnight, while you are asleep and cannot carry on shovelling snow.

HOW CAN I STOP MY CAR FROM FREEZING OVERNIGHT?

Again, using harsher chemicals to clean vehicle windscreens, locks, mirrors etc., can be risky due to the corrosive properties of many non-organic ice melts and rock salt-based sprays and grits that are out there. Splashing a frozen screen with boiling water can cause damage through the cracking or shattering of glass caused by sudden temperature fluctuations, so it is certainly best avoided too.

While many people put a blanket or sheet across the screen overnight to ward off the frost, this is only effective to a certain degree as moisture can get behind the blanket, causing the windscreen to freeze up behind the protective covering. Of course, the most effective way to keep your vehicle clear from overnight frost and ice is to keep it under cover in a garage, but this is not an option that is open to everyone for all sorts of reasons, including a budget, space, local planning laws and the size and number of vehicles needing to be protected.

Vehicle owners are recommended to use EcoGrit, keeping a container in the boot of the car for when you are away from home and affected by frost or ice and snow. You can also help other people out if you always have some EcoGrit products with you, as it is safe to use and fast-acting for rapid clearing of windscreens, mirrors and locks. You can also sprinkle EcoGrit around the car overnight to make it safer for the driver and passengers to get in and out of it the following day. You can even apply it to your tyres if you are parked on a frosty slope and concerned about your vehicle sliding overnight.

EcoGrit is a winter essential when it comes to clearing driveways and paths overnight and something that drivers and homeowners alike need to keep in stock this season. It is available in multiple sizes and formats.

The effectiveness of de-icing products overnight can vary, but if you choose one that specifically states that it can be sprinkled on exterior surfaces the night before, then you should get good results. EcoGrit can definitely be applied the night before an expected frost and is effective down to temperatures of minus 20 degrees C. It remains effective for up to seven days after application.

Again, de-icing products do vary, so check the label carefully to check that it is suitable for application to a vehicle. Never use rock salt or a de-icer that is based on rock salt or urea-derived products, as these ingredients are highly corrosive to metal and can cause damage to your vehicle.

Choose a vehicle safe de-icer such as EcoGrit for effective, safe results on your car or vehicle’s windscreen overnight. EcoGrit works on all kinds of surfaces, from concrete to glass, so it should help prevent your car’s windscreen from icing over during the night if correctly applied.

As well as applying a safe de-icer such as EcoGrit, you could try placing a blanket over your windscreen to keep the worst of the overnight frost and ice at bay. Try to keep your vehicle undercover, such as in a garage. EcoGrit can be added to water to spray any frozen locks or door handles.

It is not recommended that you add salt to the windscreen, largely due to its corrosive nature that can damage the paintwork and metallic elements of your car. The salt grains are also very coarse, which could scratch the glass or even crack it when the salt is being wiped away.
